Smart Tweezers®: Simplified Component Evaluations
Smart Tweezes is a patented design concept integrating a digital multimeter with a built-in gold-plated SMD probes and a display. This light weight device can be easily held and operated by one hand and is idealy suitable for component evaluation on a PCB or a production line and for sorting of SMD components. Smart Tweezers® dramatically reduces time necessary to troubleshoot or debug a PCB simplifying process of locating a faulty component.
The new model ST-5S of the Digital Multimeter Smart Tweezers® is the same device as the Smart Tweezers® ST-5 but with an updated look, akin to the LCR-Reader. This update boasts a lower weight of 1 oz. and a bright screen with all the same function and features that have become synonymous with Smart Tweezers®.
The unique design of Smart Tweezers® combines a set of tweezer with non-magnetic stainless-steel gold-plated tweezers tips integrated with a powerful LCR-meter and bright OLED display. With automatic recognition of a measurement mode (L, C, and R) and automatic selection of the best test range allows the user to focus on the task at hand. Without the need to set-up between components, testing, sorting and evaluating components becomes much more efficient.
Inductance, Capacitance, Resistance When a component is grasped between the tweezers, Smart Tweezers® automatically determines the type of component and the best test range for highest accuracy measurements. The measurement values are then instantly available on the OLED display embedded in the handle of the device. This display is split into 3 main sections. Primary display shows present reading of the main impedance component (L, C, or R). The secondary display (at the top of the LCD screen) shows present reading of the secondary impedance component, such as a parasitic resistance of the capacitor (effective series resistor ESR).
Continuity/Open Test Smart Tweezers®feature a continuity test for testing circuitry. An internal beeper will sound when a resistance is below threshold or an open circuit has been detected.
Durable ProbesTweezers tips are made of gold-plated non-magnetic stainless steel and can grasp components to a 0201 size or 0.3 mm either loose or mounted.
Ergonomic Design and Convinient Controls Selecting the proper test functions and settings is simple with Smart Tweezers® Joystick Navigation. Settings can be selected by pressing up, down, left or right instead of using the menu. Smart Tweezers® was designed to be easy to hold and operate with just one hand, and can be set for left-handed use.

LCR-Reader: A More Affordable LCR-meter
The LCR-Reader is the Smart Tweezers® model for hobbyists looking for a device that provides an easy to use solution to testing and troubleshooting components that Smart Tweezers® offers but at a lower price at around $200 USD. LCR-Reader is very similar to Smart Tweezers® but has a slightly lower basic accuracy, and a few less features.
Feature Summary
- Automatic L, C, R and ESR measurements
- Basic accuracy of 1%
- Automatic best range
- Li-Ion rechargeable battery, Optional USB charger
- 28 gram (1 oz.) weight
This model does not offer features such as: component sorting, continuity/diode/open circuit testing, parasitic offset subtraction feature or variable test signals (opting for only a 0.5Vrms test signal, which limits testing ceramic capacitors.) This model does not come with a calibration certificate.
